BED BUG INSPECTION METHODS

Our bed bug inspection options are customized to each client’s specific needs – business and homeowner alike.

There are many things to consider such as the layout of the area to be inspected, the severity of the problem, the number of rooms impacted, and the size of these rooms. One of our special services specialists at Terminix Wil-Kil can help you decide what the best fit is for your situation.

From determining the signs of a bed bug infestation to checking which species of bed bug you’re dealing with, we’ve got you covered on the knowledge front.

BED BUG TECHNICIAN INSPECTION

Our highly trained Terminix Wil-Kil technicians conduct meticulous inspections of your property, targeting key areas such as headboards, mattresses, bedding, nightstands, and living room furniture. They are trained to spot the telltale signs of a bed bug infestation, including dark spots (fecal matter) and the actual presence of bed bugs.

Terminix Wil-Kil’s technician will thoroughly inspect your property for bed bugs. Our inspection will look at areas like headboards, mattresses and bedding, nightstands and even living room furniture for bed bug signs like dark spots and the actual presence of a bed bug.

It is necessary that a licensed professional do this type of inspection, as they are trained to distinguish between a bed bug or other type of pest. They will also know of and search the areas most commonly infested by bed bugs, which may not be information the average person has. This is the ideal inspection method for single-family homes or hotels and apartments where only a few rooms need to be searched.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A TECHNICIAN INSPECTION

Before your scheduled bed bug inspection by a licensed Terminix Wil-Kil technician, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure the process is smooth and thorough. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Declutter: Clear away excess clutter in areas like under beds, along baseboards, and around furniture. This allows the technician to inspect all potential bed bug hiding spots without obstruction.
  • Leave Furniture in Place: Avoid moving furniture or bedding before the inspection. Our technicians are trained to spot signs of bed bugs and will need to inspect items in their current location.
  • Wash and Dry Bedding: It’s helpful to wash and dry bedding on high heat prior to the inspection, but keep the bedding in place until the technician can inspect it.
  • Notify the Technician of Any Prior Treatments: If you’ve used any over-the-counter sprays or treatments, it’s essential to let the technician know as it could affect the inspection process.
  • Vacuum: A thorough vacuuming of floors, carpets, and upholstery can help reduce bed bug activity but don’t dispose of the vacuum bag just yet—leave it for the technician to inspect for signs of bed bugs.

Proper preparation helps ensure that the technician can conduct a meticulous and effective inspection, enabling quick detection and treatment if necessary.

Canine Inspection

Terminix Wil-Kil was the first pest control company in the upper Midwest to offer bed bug canine inspections. Our team of canines are certified on an annual basis by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA). Our dogs (Bull, Stevie and Jack) use their keen sense of smell to detect live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs. Terminix Wil-Kil’s canine teams can find the bed bugs within minutes, making the inspection more accurate and cost-effective compared to traditional detection methods.

To ensure the safety of our canines, we have inspection preparation guidelines that must be followed, some of those rules include:

  • No pesticide usage 30 days before inspection.
  • Notify your service team of any suspicion of fleas.
  • Remove any pest control products (mouse/rodent bait, glue boards, snap traps, etc.).
  • Refrain from using household cleaners at least 3 hours before inspection.
  • Remove all other pets for the duration of the inspection, and relocate pet food dishes, litter boxes and toys.
  • Extinguish smoking materials or candles three hours prior to inspection.

THE QUICK FACTS ON BED BUG INSPECTIONS

When it comes to detecting bed bugs, speed and accuracy are essential.

At Terminix Wil-Kil, we use the most advanced techniques and highly trained teams to ensure thorough inspections that effectively target infestations.

Below are some key facts that highlight why professional inspections are the best approach for identifying and eliminating these resilient pests.

  • Bed bugs are hard to find, which is why Terminix Wil-Kil has a special services team dedicated to the education, inspection and elimination of bed bugs.
  • Canine inspections help technicians locate infested areas quickly and save time because there is generally no need to remove furniture, bedding, carpets and other infested items.
  • A canine’s nose is more adept at detecting bed bugs than a human’s eyes, which is why they are so fast at detection.
  • Dogs are trained to only identify live bed bugs and viable eggs.
  • Bed bugs can live in cracks, crevices, electrical outlets, wall voids, wallpaper, baseboards, picture frames, mattresses, box springs, headboards, upholstered furniture and more.
  • Bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown insects that resemble an apple seed are about ¼ of an inch when full grown. After a blood meal, they can appear round and tick-like.
  • Bed bug eggs and immature bed bugs are hard to see and require a certified technician or canine team to effectively locate them.

TYPES OF BED BUG TREATMENT

If we detect bed bugs, we typically recommend one of two primary treatment options:

  • Conventional chemical treatment: This method involves the targeted application of EPA-approved insecticides to areas where bed bugs are hiding. Our technicians apply these treatments in cracks, crevices, and along baseboards, as well as on mattresses and furniture. Chemical treatments are effective at killing bed bugs at all life stages, ensuring thorough eradication.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Pesticide Dusts
  • Pesticide Sprays
  • Crack & Crevice Injection / Spot Treatment
  • Mattress Encasements

Read about our conventional treatment.

  • Heat treatment: This treatment involves raising the temperature of the affected area to a level lethal to bed bugs and their eggs. Heat treatments penetrate deep into furniture, walls, and other hard-to-reach areas, ensuring a comprehensive solution without the use of pesticides.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Vacuuming
  • Pesticide Dust
  • Heat (120°F and above)
  • Mattress Encasements
